Policing the peaceful George Floyd protest and ensuing civil unrest that occurred May 31 in San Bernardino has cost the city more than $500,000 in overtime, salaries, materials and supplies, according to a report prepared for elected officials by acting police Chief Eric McBride.
To be presented Wednesday, July 1, McBride’s four-page report chronicles the day hundreds of people gathered downtown to protest institutional racism and police brutality in honor of Floyd, who died on Memorial Day in Minneapolis police custody after then-Officer Derek Chauvin was recorded kneeling on the unarmed Black man’s neck for nearly nine minutes.
Chauvin and three other officers implicated in Floyd’s death have been fired and face criminal charges.
