Richie Greenberg, a former Republican mayoral candidate and a main proponent of the recall effort, said the campaign is fueled by public sentiment that the city has been overrun by criminals who face no consequences for their actions. Boudin, a progressive prosecutor whose policies seek reduce mass incarceration, has emerged a prime target for those who believe that the city has become increasingly more dangerous. That position is largely at odds with city crime statistics, which show a drop in overall crime and particularly violent crime.
“The state of criminal justice here is completely decimated,” said Greenberg, who serves as the committee’s spokesperson. “We see it almost every day — someone getting robbed, shot at; brazen daytime home invasions. Residents are sick of it.”
