Lawmakers opposing Gov. Gavin Newsom’s newly proposed budget deal said they won’t be backing down without a fight.
The budget deal, which is expected to pass this week, would withhold emergency funds from counties not following state COVID-19 guidelines. Newsom and plan advocates said they believe the move will help stem the spread of the deadly disease. This week, California saw its highest spike in the novel coronavirus cases in a single day.
“It’s immoral for anyone to take money away from the community that’s already felt the effects of this virus,” Assemblymember James Gallagher, R-Yuba City, said. “We’ve seen massive gatherings in Sacramento… San Francisco… Los Angeles… Is the governor saying he’s going to take away funding from those areas? What’s the criteria here?”
