San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously passed legislation that would allow safe-injection sites through an overdose prevention program.
Mayor London Breed and District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney’s legislation would create permits that would allow nonprofit health providers to operate the sites.
The program is aimed at getting drug use off of the streets and intravenous drug users into treatment. According to the city, the number of overdose deaths increased from 259 in 2018 to 330 overdose deaths in 2019.
