Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner said Monday, June 15 that he will recommend the district’s school board eliminate school police officers’ use of pepper spray and policies allowing carotid choke holds before the next academic year.
He also tapped a small group of community members to help conduct a budget review of the Los Angeles school police, “to look at what is needed to keep schools safe as well as what students need to feel free from stigma,” and present concrete changes to the school board as soon as possible.
The seven-member, democratically elected Board of Education makes funding decisions for the L.A. School Police Department (LASPD), one of the larger independent school law enforcement bodies in the nation.
