Long Beach Police Have Taken 940 Guns Off The Streets This Year

Long Beach police have taken more than 940 guns off of the streets so far in 2019, an accomplishment the department attributes to recent efforts to decrease firearm-related crime in the city, authorities said.

Measure A funding led to the creation of the Police Department’s Prohibited Possessor Team, which has partnered with Los Angeles Superior Court employees to identify people through records who have not relinquished their firearms. Typically, an individual has 24 to 48 hours to turn in their weapons or sell them after he or she has been determined to be a prohibited possessor; such a person could be a convicted felon, someone convicted of a certain misdemeanor, someone involved in domestic abuse, or an individual with a history of severe mental illness.
