California Assemblymembers Introduce Bill To Require Voter ID

California lawmakers have introduced a bill to implement voter identification requirements in response to President Donald Trump’s demand for the state to reform how it holds elections to unlock wildfire aid.

State Assemblymembers Carl DeMaio (R-San Diego) and Bill Essayli (R-Corona) introduced the measure, describing it in a statement Monday as an enhancement to bolster trust and security in the state’s elections.

Specifically, the legislation, Assembly Bill 25, would roll back a different law passed last year prohibiting local governments in California from compelling production of an ID to vote, making signature certification the blanket process in the state to confirm a voter’s citizenship.
