San Francisco will compete to host the Democratic National Convention in 2020 and Mayor Mark Farrell says locating the event here would send a strong message to President Donald Trump.

Farrell sent a letter Thursday to chairman of the Democratic National Committee Tom Perez saying he would like San Francisco to be considered as the host city for the event.

The letter is the first step in the process before a formal bid is made. Other mayors reportedly have sent letters as well, including Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.
